As September 1st approaches, dove season kicks off, and that means you need to get your gear dialed in now! Below, I’ve shared an updated list for dove hunting gear. It does include some from the upland list, but if you’re sitting in a field, you’ll want to limit the orange.
Whether you’re a first-time wingshooter or a seasoned hunter, having appropriate clothing and equipment makes all the difference. In some areas, dove hunts are hot and sunny, but in my part of the country, we often experience cool mornings with warmer temperatures later. That means you need layers to keep you comfortable in the action, but you don’t have to sacrifice style while you’re at it.
Look for gear made of wool or a polypropylene-blend material. This helps regulate your core temperature.
I’ve curated my favorite picks to help women hunters step confidently into the field. You’ll find this year’s updated Dove Hunting Gear List on my Amazon Storefront and inspiration boards on Pinterest. From functional upland staples to stylish performance wear, here are recommended essentials:
Style Meets Function
This guide is specifically designed for women’s gear that works well in the field. It used to be that hunting clothes were made for men and scaled down for women, resulting in a poor fit and less comfort. Nowadays, we have more options with gear that is designed to fit us. I’ve added items to my Amazon Storefront with women hunters in mind. Look for technical fabrics with flattering cuts, resulting in gear that not only performs well but also looks great.
Essential Dove Hunting Gear for Women
Brush Pants or Field Pants
Protect your legs while walking through thick grass and briars. A pair of brush pants or durable field pants keeps you comfortable and snag-free—without looking bulky.
Boots and Gaiters
A good pair of boots can make or break your hunt. For dove season, opt for lightweight, breathable boots that provide support while walking through the fields or standing for extended periods. If you don’t have brush pants, pair them with a set of gaiters to keep out stickers, burrs, and dust.
Lightweight Quilted Vests & Jackets
Cool mornings and warm afternoons call for easy layering. A quilted vest or jacket adds warmth at sunrise and stashes easily once the day heats up.
Upland Vests or Dove Belts
These keep shells, water, and game close at hand. Choose a vest with breathable panels for hot days, or a dove belt for lightweight convenience.
Performance Shirts with UPF Protection
Breathable, quick-dry fabrics with UPF 50+ protect your skin while keeping you cool. Neutral colors or subtle camo blends function with style.
Caps & Accessories
Caps are essential for protecting our eyes and skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Recoil Pads or Shooting Shirts
In some areas, you’ll have an abundance of birds, which means lots of shooting. Don’t let a sore shoulder ruin your day. Slip-on recoil pads or padded shooting shirts provide cushion during extended periods of shooting.
Eye & Ear Protection
These are a must, but you can find stylish shooting glasses and slim electronic ear protection that help you stay safe and enhance awareness in the field.
Dove Decoys & Spinning Wings
Decoys entice birds to come closer for more shooting opportunities. A mix of stationary and motion decoys can make a difference on a slow day.
Bucket Seat, Cooler Chair, or Packable Stool
Unlike upland hunts that keep you moving, dove hunts are often about waiting in the field. A bucket seat with storage, a cooler chair, or a lightweight stool makes long sits more comfortable—and doubles as extra gear storage.
Breathable Gloves & Backpacks
Finish off your gear with lightweight gloves for protection, along with a small pack to carry water, ammo, and snacks.
