Real-Life Heroine Shares Her Story “Heels to Holster”

One of the best things about attending numerous events is the people that you meet and the stories they tell about how they came to the outdoor, hunting, fishing, or shooting industry.

I’ve been teaching at the She Never Quit event for a few years, and the first year I met a woman with an amazing story, only I didn’t really realize just how amazing her saga really is. That is until now.

Shirley Watral is a firearms instructor and board member for the Women’s Outdoor Media Association, which presents the She Never Quit event. The first time I met Shirley, she greeted me with a huge smile and drew me in as a friend in the industry.

I overheard Shirley telling the story about how she came to shooting. She spoke of a stalker, and I made a mental note of admiration about her honesty in learning lessons throughout her life. Later, she announced on social media that she’s writing a book about her life-threatening experience. I read a couple of her posts and then decided that I needed to wait for the book so I could read it all the way through.

This year at the She Never Quit event Shirley hosted a book signing, and I received my very own copy of her newly released book, “Heels to Holster — One Women’s Story of Surviving an Abusive Relationship and Discovering Her Inner Warrior.”

This is a hair-raising tale that sucks you right in. You may feel as though you’re reading from a movie script as you tag along with the author, thinking, “this surely couldn’t happen in the real world” — except this is her real-life experience. The author shares her story and gives the reader advice as she learns from what happened. It’s a great read and a way to learn to be as courageous as this empowering woman. — She is a superhero.
