WCO – Memorable Firsts

Wolf Creek Outfitters, Inc.

First season was a success for Wolf Creek Outfitters, Inc. (WCO). Our hunter was a first timer and made the ever tough elk hunt look easy. He took a 6×6 bull on the second day of the season.

The play by play:

Thursday: Sight in the rifle and practice shooting from shooting sticks. Identify hunting location.

Friday: Review game plan and meeting times.

Saturday: First day of season. Meet at hunting location. Controlled burn has begun on neighboring land. Guide hears bull in distance, hunter does not. Hike, call, no animals. Break time for lunch. Guide brings horses for evening hunt. Lots of smoke and not a single animal for evening hunt. Hunter is discouraged.

Smoke filled valley

The valley filled with smoke from a controlled burn.

Sunday: Second day of season. Meet at hunting location. Controlled burn still going but smoke is blowing south. After daylight hunter and guide hear bull. It is “on fire” screaming. They see him. He is coming in. He is hung up on the edge of the meadow. Guide tries to work him around. He is not coming from the dark timber. New plan. They go to him. Now they see three bulls, 6×6, 3×4, 4×4 and about 10 cows. The wind changes direction and the smoke is filling the valley. The bulls are not coming. New direction to get to them. The hunter is tired from the hike up, down, through brush and up. He is discouraged thinking elk were the other direction but still listened to direction and went across a ridge. Suddenly, they see the bull. The hunter makes a great shot and has not just an elk, but a 6×6 bull on the second day of the season.

A happy hunter with his first bull elk.

We were faced with challenges and still manged to make things happen. We are proud to be a part of this hunter’s great memories. Congratulations to another new elk hunter!

Can’t Say That Anymore

Life gets busy and time seems to just slip through our hands. I am like everyone else and have a busy life.  WAY back in August, I won a photo. It was from the July caption contest at the Women’s Outdoor News (theWON). I typically say “I never win anything.” but guess what?! I can’t say that anymore!

This particular contest was exciting for me because not only was I supporting the WON, I was also getting a chance to own my VERY OWN Stacey Huston photograph! I rarely participate in these, but I saw the image for this monthly caption contest and instantly entered my thoughts. (note: you can’t win if you don’t enter) After that I forgot about it until I was at our county fair and received a message that I was the winner and also the proud new owner of a Stacey Huston! I was very excited to say the least.

I received the photo in August and right away I knew it had to have a special place in the house. I dropped it off to be framed and matted and then headed off for my vacation in the Gulf of Mexico. As I said, time flies! That was August and I received the beautifully framed photograph just before my birthday in September. I deemed it ”a birthday present from the WON“!  It really wasn’t but many of you know the whole month of September is celebrated as MY birthday – by ME! So anything wonderful that happens during September is of course labeled with “birthday” forMia by Mia!

I picked a spot for my new artwork and hung it right away. Then I headed out on my bear hunt for the rest of the month. Not another spare moment… Time still flying. Now it is October, and I had a moments break this weekend. I took the morning to clean and dust all our mounts and other items in the house. Then TAH-DAH! There in it’s very own special spot is my “Stacey”. It is an adorable picture of a cute little fawn. Hank says it “softens” the room a little bit. Can you believe that? From Hank? He and the Little Gal like it too. They say it has a special place among the other artwork and mounts in the room. We see such wonderful things in our outdoor adventures all the time. Stacey just caught a precious moment with her camera and now it is ours to share.

I had to give a word about it, FINALLY, because it is such a great photo and the photographer is such a wonderful lady, and the WON has this contest so I think you should stop by and check it out. While you are there, enter a caption and then you have a chance to win too. Many days, weeks, and now a couple of months have passed, but THANK YOU! I won it at the WON! (for my birthday! *wink, wink*)

Family Fun

It is in between hunting seasons in Colorado and today was a holiday. It isn’t often that you get the three of us together with “nothing” to do, but today seemed to be a day for Hank, Mia and the Little Gal. We did some chores and then took the opportunity to spend some quality family time together. What defines family time at your house? Well, at our house it of course involves something that shoots. Today: Shotguns were the definition of Family Fun.

We loaded up in the little truck with clays, shells and our shot guns. We headed out back to practice something we all need work on. Shooting clays.

The Little Gal blasts some clays.

The Little Gal has her very own special gun. It is a Remington 870 youth model. It is a 2o gauge pump action. It is just her size so it is her “favorite”. She did very well learning to swing and lead the clay as it flew, but we primarily worked with her on safety because it is so important to make good habits become second nature. She knows when she is safe we ALL have more fun!

I worked on form and my swing because I tend to line things out, point and shoot. That means I of course MISS. I continued to struggle in this area but have resolved to practice more so it will become more natural to me.Mia Anstine practices shooting clays

After some practicing Hank and I took to our usual competition. I generally win (at least the last three competitions were won by MIA). Today, I was obviously over thinking and trying way too hard. Hank whooped me hands down. I demand a rematch!

Daisy says "Every dog has it's day" as Hank whoops up on Mia shooting clays. (I just love how she's always on my side! hah!!)

Today was a lot of fun and most of all, it was good quality time with the family! The day was a BLAST to say the least! I love family time!
