NOVICE YOUTH ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR MENTORED, PRIVATE LAND TURKEY HUNT

MEEKER, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering three young hunters a unique chance to win a mentored, high-quality spring turkey hunt on private land near Meeker, scheduled to take place the weekend of April 11 and 12, 2015. The hunt is made possible with the help and support of local landowners in partnership with CPW wildlife managers.

As part of the agency’s Hunter Outreach Program, the hunt is a part of a continuing effort to instill respect for wildlife, the outdoors, and the traditions of hunting in Colorado’s youth.

All novice youth hunters are encouraged to apply; however, those that have no prior hunting experience, have special family circumstances or health conditions that limit their opportunity to participate in the sport of hunting will be given priority over experienced young hunters that come from hunting families.

“I encourage kids that want to learn to hunt turkey to apply for this hunt” said Bailey Franklin, hunt organizer and District Wildlife Manager in Meeker. “I urge parents to keep in mind that this is a great way to introduce a young person to ethical hunting and the proper and safe way to handle a firearm.”

The opportunity is open to boys and girls under the age of 18 that posses a hunter education card.

Applicants must send a letter of interest postmarked by March 31, 2015 to:

DWM Bailey Franklin
PO Box 1181
Meeker, CO 81641

The letter should indicate specifically why the youth is interested in being selected for this special turkey hunt and must include the youth’s name, address and hunter education card number. It must also include a phone number for the applicant’s parent or guardian.  In addition, each letter must include an essay of 500 words or less about why the applicant should be selected over the other youth applicants for this special youth turkey hunt opportunity. The essay must be written by the applicant and in their own words.

The applicant’s lack of experience, any personal obstacles that have prevented the ability to hunt in past and the desire to learn about hunting are suggested topics for the required essay.

The three participants will be selected based upon the essays and will be notified by CPW on or before April 3, 2015.

All participants selected for this hunt will be required to attend a pre-hunt orientation at Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Meeker office, Friday, April 10, from 3 – 5 p.m., accompanied by a parent, guardian or mentor.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will provide shotguns, ammunition, blinds and calls. Selected hunters must provide their own camouflage clothing, lodging and food.

For more information, call the CPW office in Meeker at 970-878-6090.
