Keep bird feeders on hand. You’ll not only keep the birds happy, but you’ll also get to enjoy watching them in your backyard.
HOW YOU CAN HELP WINTER BIRDS
Days are short and nights are cold and long in much of North America. Water supplies are frozen, and food needed to provide the energy to keep birds warm is scarce.
If there are limited natural evergreens or shelter, they may seek birdhouses or habitats in your backyard that can provide refuge from winter winds, rains, ice or snow.
On cold, wintry days, most birds fluff up their feathers, creating air pockets, which help keep them warm. The more air spaces, the better the insulation. To keep up with their high metabolic rate, most backyard birds eat rich, energy-high foods such as seeds and suet.
There are times when birds are not prepared to deal with sudden drops in temperature or winter storms, so it is especially helpful to have feeders full so that birds can find food easily.
As a reward, you get to enjoy watching them in your own backyard.
