CPW & NRA Invite Women to Learn Fly Fishing and Shotgun Shooting

BASALT, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife, partnering with the National Rifle Association, will offer a free, women’s Cast and Blast on Saturday, Aug. 8, in Basalt. All women 18 and older interested in learning how to fly fish and the safe use of shotguns are encouraged to sign up for the one-day seminar.

Women’s Cast and Blasts are among the most popular and fill quickly.  For details and registration, contact CPW’s Glenwood Springs office at 970-947-2920.  A $20 refundable deposit is required upon registration.

“This class is designed as an entry level clinic teaching basic techniques in a comfortable environment,” said District Wildlife Manager and instructor Matt Yamashita of Basalt. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to take the first step toward getting involved with hunting and fishing in Colorado.”

The Basalt Cast and Blast is offered through Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Hunter Outreach Program and is aimed at teaching participants the basics of fly-fishing and shooting.  The event is taught by CPW staff and volunteers and encompasses a full day of activities.

The morning session covers basic fly fishing skills such as knot-tying and casting followed by an opportunity to implement these techniques on the water.  The afternoon shooting portion of the clinic introduces participants to basic shotgun safety, shooting techniques and will conclude with participants shooting clay targets on a trap range.

A valid fishing license is required for participants and can be purchased at a CPW office, sporting goods store, fly shop or online.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch, snacks, water, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain gear and any other personal supplies.

CPW’s Hunter Outreach Program includes workshops, clinics, seminars and educational hunts that focus on teaching the skills, ethics and traditions of hunting to novice youth and women.
