Pheasant Hunting at the Bluffs with Denver Sables

This month traveling to the Denver area meant meeting a terrific group of women and a memorable pheasant hunt.

As the Colorado area Regional Representative for Safari Club International (SCI) I travel throughout the state, attending events and getting to know the people who make things happen in the state’s chapters. When I attended the Denver Chapter’s annual banquet last April, I worked the membership table alongside the Sables table.

Having heard of the Sables before, I needed additional information. I learned that the Sables are dedicated to the Safari Club International Foundation’s (SCIF’s) education programs, which work to share the conservation message with future generations, and the SCIF education programs support hunting advocacy efforts.

I too support these things, so I signed up for a Sables membership right there.

This summer I received an invite to join the Sables on a pheasant hunt at The Bluffs wingshooting lodge in Byers, Colorado. With a passion for hunting, and a desire to get to know more of the Denver Sables members, I squeeze the trip into my calendar.

I zipped home (a 14-hour drive) from the She Never Quit event in Texas, off-loaded my archery gear off and took a night to rest. Then, I packed my upland gear up and hit the road to Denver. Thankfully, I have family up there, so I stopped for a pit-stop and additional rest at their house before cruising out to the Bluffs where I met a dozen fabulous women.

It’s a joy to meet people who are like old friends, and it’s even better to get to take to the trap range and hunting field with them.

We enjoyed time shooting clays and then gathered around the table for dinner where we shared introductions, stories, and updates on current events. Mary Predovich, the Denver Sables president, shared upcoming events and tossed around fundraising ideas. The group is very relaxed but passionate and it’s evident that they make things happen.

THE HUNT

We met our guide and his dogs the morning of the hunt. There had been a cold snap while I’d been in Texas the week prior, so I bought a pile of warm winter hunt-wear but happily didn’t need those warm layers. The weather was mild to warm and the dogs did a fine job of pointing pheasants and a few chukar. I look forward to joining in on this annual event again.
