Mia visits with Eva Shockey

Hey! Guess what? There is a new post up at the WON. Check out show I had the opportunity to chat with at SHOT Show in Vegas this January. Boy is LG a little upset about this one too. Some day she’ll be old enough to attend.

Mia & The Little Gal: An interview with Eva Shockey

I had the pleasure of speaking with Eva Shockey, co-host of “Jim Shockey’s Hunting Adventures,” airing on the Outdoor Channel. I was pleasantly surprised to find that she is even more genuine in person than on television. The young huntress was filled with enthusiasm as she gave me some insight into her love of hunting and closeness of her family. …Click HERE to read the full interview.

Should I be sad – Looking at search engine terms

Sometimes you just gotta have fun with things…..

Do you happen to have a blog? Do you ever look to see what search engine terms people type in that refer them to your site? Well I just did, and I am appalled. The top referer today is “who is the older dark haired lady hunter on tv”.

WHAT?!

Am I “older”? Well, maybe.

Yes. I am dark-haired.

Yes. I am a lady hunter.

Nope. I’m not on TV. Well, I was on Cam&Co. Last year with the Women’s Outdoor News.

Hank and I are now laughing out loud because that is a first, and we are always bickering about age. He is older than me…. Barely, but older is older right?!

Well, I guess I better write another post about being “  pleased and especially impressed that I didn’t look like a black-haired wild lion afterward.” These words are what were picked up by someones search. They are referring to a post I added a while back about scent free products by HerCAMOShop. Read the post here.

Gotta love it! Coming from someone who looks like a dark-haired, older, lion, huntress. HAH!!! Now… To get on TV!

Here I am, a huntress, dark haired and looking like a lion.

Here I am, a huntress, dark-haired and looking like a lion.

Snuggly Toes review

For the past two and a half months I have been field testing a product that many of us wish for in the cold winter months. I received Snuggly Toes alpaca feet warmers in August. They proclaim to keep your feet warm and cozy. Of course that time of year, things are already warm so I had to wait a while to give them a true field test.

Upon first view of the feet warmers, I noted that they felt delicate to the touch. They were indeed soft and snuggly. Since it was August, I put them in my sandals and wow, were they SOFT! My bare feet thought they were wonderful. I had to wait until late September to give them a try with my cotton and wool-blend socks.

Snuggly Toes come in whole sizes and are easy to trim to fit your shoe. I opted to field test them in my hunting boots since I wear them the most throughout the year and would love to have warm feet in them. They were simple to trim and fit nicely inside. I do a lot of hiking and of course as the season progresses, the weather gets cold and so do my toes. I was happy to try these cozy inserts out.

I was initially concerned with the softness of the alpaca liner. I thought they may bunch up, slip or slide inside my boots as I climbed steep mountain slopes. They have held in place over the past 75 days of miles and miles of wearing, hiking and climbing.

Another concern for me was that the liners were soft and felt delicate. I thought they may become thin and wear through with such rigorous use. The Snuggly Toes remained in tact. They formed to my foot and are still intact after prolonged use.  There are no thin spots. The felting process of spinning the fur into yarn, knit into a “blanket,” then felted into fabric makes them very durable and they are even washable.

Lastly, and most importantly, I hoped that these feet warmers would eliminate the feeling of having your toes turn into ice cubes. The weather has been moderate this fall, but morning temperatures have still gotten down to the teens and twenties. I continued to test the Snuggly Toes feet warmers down into 13 degree temperatures. While the alpaca liner did feel warm and cozy, I must say my toes did get cold. Even with the combination of the alpaca liner and my wool-blend socks, I froze my toes more than one time in the past 75 days.

I do recommend the liners for overall cozy comfort in your shoe, but they are not a substitute for a highly insulated boot or ThermaCell. I will add these liners to my insulated winter boot for additional comfort. I would also recommend using them as replacements for your worn out boot liners in your snow boots.

You can purchase Snuggly Toes at http://www.snugglytoes.com/ for $39.95 a pair. They are available in whole sizes for men and women, and easily trimmed to fit your boot. Custom insoles are available at your request and can be ordered via their website. The customer service is outstanding. These alpaca fur cozy liners are 100% organic and made in the USA!

Excellent show: Skull Bound TV

My weekdays are primarily shared between the Little Gal and work so on the weekend I do my best to get outdoors. I don’t watch TV often, but last winter I did get to catch an episode of a friend/fellow Prois Staffer’s show on the Sportsman’s Channel which I really enjoyed.

http://www.skullboundtv.com/

I first met Jana Waller in 2011 at the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas. As we introduced ourselves at the Prois booth my first impression was that she was kind hearted and genuinely down to earth. She and her camera man, Jim Kinsey, chatted with Hank and I and told us of their mission to create a show incorporating hunting, conservation and Jana’s famous skulls. We both thought the idea was great and couldn’t wait to see the huntress on the flat screen.Prois Staff Mia Anstine and Jana Waller

I caught the first episode last winter and truly enjoyed it. As I said, I am not around often so I felt it was unfortunate that I didn’t get to see more of Jana’s shows. When I saw the season 1 dvd set come available, I purchased it right away along with a Skull Bound T-shirt for my Little Gal. The Little Gal just loves the shirt and is currently watching Jana’s shows. Me? I watched nearly four hours of content right away and enjoyed every minute of it. The cinematography was outstanding, and I have been told season two will be even better. I’m going to have to get that one too.

I highly recommend the show to hunters and non-hunters alike. It is great to “travel the world with” Jana Waller as your host. She share’s the highs as well as the lows of her hunts (which I find impressive because not every show ends with a harvest). She and Jim have included a “Conservation Minute” in each episode to help educate the viewer on hunting, conservation and how we can all make a difference. They share the cultures of the people in the areas they spend time in with you the viewer, and you feel the friendship that is created along their journeys. You of course will also see unique and amazing skulls, both raw as well as embellished with Jana’s one of a kind beading and painting.

I am excited for my Little Gal to watch the excellent hunting and conservation ethics portrayed in the episodes and think you should take a moment to enjoy them as well. The Little Gal with her Skull Bound TV season 1 & T-shirt

Not smelling pretty, but happy to be Scent Free with HerCAMOShop products

Sometimes a girl doesn’t want to smell pretty.

Earlier this summer Hank, the Little Gal and I drove a giant loop through the south to hunt in Oklahoma and Alabama. We hunted with friends while in Oklahoma, and with Rack Nine Outdoors (RNO) in Alabama. We met up with friends from the Women’s Outdoor News and also HerCAMOShop.com’s Jeff and Shelly Ray. It was a pleasure to hunt with the group at RNO. They took very good care of us and one evening, while eating a delicious meal, Shelly Ray produced a gift to the Little Gal and I. She gave us a trial package of her scent free products.

Thanks to Jeff & Shelly Ray of HerCAMOShop.com

Thanks to Jeff & Shelly Ray of HerCAMOShop.com for the excellent ladies scent free product. So great in fact that it’s already mysteriously gone missing. Someone else loved it too!

I tested the products, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, lotion and body spray. They all passed my test of allowing a comb through my course thick hair. I was so pleased and especially impressed that I didn’t look like a black haired wild lion afterward. I say that because most volume shampoos add way too much volume for my extremely thick hair. The HerCAMOShop shampoo and conditioner did not. My hair felt thick but smooth. My hair had body, but did not stand up like a lion main. It was fantastic. Now I just had to take it out in the field for “the hunt”.

I am just returning from a bear hunt and no, I didn’t get a bear -YET-. Another huntress, who booked the same hunt, and I hunted in a pair with our guide. The other huntress got first shot and did get her bear. The scent free products obviously work well. We ended up close to bears in the brush. I am so pleased with HerCAMOShop.com’s scent free products and just had to share!

I also just ran acrossed my friend Becky Lou of BeckyLouOutdoors.com post. It is a review about the products. You simply have to check it out. She has said every word that I have thought as I tested the products. Read her post here: Becky Lou Outdoors HerCAMOShop Scent Free Product Review

Guys, if you surprise your beautiful huntress with these heavenly bath and body products for hunting season, she is sure to be happy, and trust me on this, “when the huntress is happy, everybody’s happy!” Becky Lou

Ultra-Light Harness: for binoculars, cameras or range finders

I’m always out scouting and looking for the next exciting thing in the outdoors which means I am always carrying my binoculars and/or my camera. I was a little hesitant when I first pulled this product out of the package, but after giving it the good ole outdoor try, it has earned my respect.

The Ultra-Light Harness from Rick Young Outdoors is a one-size fits all product. It is small and not bulky. It is easy to adjust which is exciting to a Colorado girl who tends to need lots of layers in our extreme climate. This harness did not bind or constrict my movement in the early morning hours as I glassed for toms with my Swarovski 8.5 x 42 binoculars. I mention the bino’s because if you have them or have used them, you will know that not only are they excellent, but they weigh about 2.5 pounds. This harness is said to hold up to 3.5 pounds. It has held up nicely with the weight and has shown no sign of stretching out during hiking, running and horseback riding. That is a feature that gained a smile. Other harnesses tend to stretch under the weight and become loose and floppy which is not a feature I look for in a harness.

The harness Rick Young Outdoors has designed  has a single fast point adjustment system at the neck. I was worried about my long hair being tangled in it, but thus far that has not been an issue. With the single point adjustment I am able to reach back, squeeze and give a pull or a tug to quickly shorten the harness after my jacket or vest are removed or when I am covering country via horseback.

When riding horseback with my binos on I tend to sling them to the side to keep the from bumping the saddle horn or so I don’t end up taking a hit to the sternum. The binos easily slung to one side or the other without snagging or binding on my jacket or other clothing. I didn’t have to worry about them flopping at my side or knocking against my saddle. They remained snug against my body.

With the bino’s attached to the Ultra-Light Harness they were snug to my body. I wasn’t worried about them getting caught on branches as I snuck through the brush. As I emerged and pulled up the binos to view the turkeys, I didn’t have to tug or pull them away as I held them to my eyes. Another harnesses I have is hard to pull up when it is tight to my body and then hard to hold steady because of the tension caused. This harness was held up, away from the body with ease as I scanned the valleys.

Overall I give Rick Young Outdoors high recommendations for their Ultra-Light Harness. Way to go designing a one-size fits all product that would even work nicely with a camera or range finder.

The harness retails at $19.95 and is available at rickyoungoutdoors.com

A must have for the lady hunter – PRÓIS® Ultra Short Sleeve

Turkey hunting starts in just three days here in Colorado! That means we will have our chilly mornings to contend with and warm mid-day and afternoon. Last week it was up below 30 in the morning and high 70′s in the afternoon. That means layers are required. One of the tools that is a favorite for layering is the Prois Ultra Short Sleeve. Ladies, keep it in mind when you are shopping for the necessities. We ladies are always looking for the best in women’s hunting clothing. I tell ya, Prois is tops on my list.
