Should I be sad – Looking at search engine terms

Sometimes you just gotta have fun with things…..

Do you happen to have a blog? Do you ever look to see what search engine terms people type in that refer them to your site? Well I just did, and I am appalled. The top referer today is “who is the older dark haired lady hunter on tv”.

WHAT?!

Am I “older”? Well, maybe.

Yes. I am dark-haired.

Yes. I am a lady hunter.

Nope. I’m not on TV. Well, I was on Cam&Co. Last year with the Women’s Outdoor News.

Hank and I are now laughing out loud because that is a first, and we are always bickering about age. He is older than me…. Barely, but older is older right?!

Well, I guess I better write another post about being “  pleased and especially impressed that I didn’t look like a black-haired wild lion afterward.” These words are what were picked up by someones search. They are referring to a post I added a while back about scent free products by HerCAMOShop. Read the post here.

Gotta love it! Coming from someone who looks like a dark-haired, older, lion, huntress. HAH!!! Now… To get on TV!

Here I am, a huntress, dark haired and looking like a lion.

Here I am, a huntress, dark-haired and looking like a lion.

A Favorite – the Turas

My favorite shirt! The other day I noticed a shirt.  I was looking at photos and there it was again and again.  It is in the photos from the NWTF ladies shoot.  It is in fly fishing photos.  It is in county fair photos.  It’s in stories about me and the Little Gal.  It’s in family bar-b-que photos and it is in various other photos.  It is a shirt that maybe has never made it to the closet.    It gets worn and then thrown into the dirty clothes basket and washed again.  It’s the same story.  Over and over, again and again.  It has to be called my favorite.

The favorite is my Prois Turas long sleeve.  This shirt is so comfortable that I would like to wear it every day.  It is light and form-fitting.  It is obviously durable since it is worn and washed nearly every other day.  It is made of a “wicking” polyester fabric.  It wicks moisture away from my body and has never been wrinkled.  It’s ideal to wear while you are training for hunting season.  I wear it for brisk morning runs and never get too hot or too cold.  I have even worn it in the middle of the summer horseback riding and fishing.  It keeps the sun from burning my skin and is light enough that I don’t melt.

They say it was “created for your journey”.  I say it was created for my life which is always an adventure.  I wear it to run in, to hike in, to shoot in, to fish in, to layer when it’s hot or cold out.  I think if Prois made it in every color of the rainbow, I’d have to have one of each.  For now I have white, and I better get the navy and black on order asap.  So far, over 100 washings and it is still going strong.  I can no longer read the washing instructions, but I’m pretty sure it used to say “machine wash cold”.  If it didn’t, I guess you’ll  have to let me know when you get yours.

From a mountain top I am connected to all things

Time to catch up. I’ve been up on top of the world for quite a few days. It’s a place I love. If you’ve been “On top of the world” you know what it feels like to be so close to the Heaven’s.

Alwyn Torquil Francis Ladell
There is something very spiritual about the mountain top experience … and it’s not less oxygen!

Looking out over the wide vistas, and climbing above the clouds, forces us to consider the bigger questions. It strips away the cares and concerns of the little people in the mundane world below and helps us contemplate the bigger picture. There can be an exaltation, like that of being strongly moved by certain passages of music, in such places. Sometimes there is a closeness to those who have gone before, which can be very emotional, but the magnitude and beauty tends to drive out sorrow with reassurance. It speaks a language we can’t articulate, using symbols to communicate with the higher consciousness – and this expansion of consciousness is something we need to hang on to when we return to the daily routine. When starved of spirituality in the material world, if we can recall that mountain-top experience, we have a life-line to the Divine.

“Prayer is the uplifting of the soul to God” – Saint Nilus the Elder (d.430), On Prayer.

It is my goal to share with others. Now, I am happy to share some of the awesomeness of the outdoors. Enjoy….

Excellent show: Skull Bound TV

My weekdays are primarily shared between the Little Gal and work so on the weekend I do my best to get outdoors. I don’t watch TV often, but last winter I did get to catch an episode of a friend/fellow Prois Staffer’s show on the Sportsman’s Channel which I really enjoyed.

http://www.skullboundtv.com/

I first met Jana Waller in 2011 at the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas. As we introduced ourselves at the Prois booth my first impression was that she was kind hearted and genuinely down to earth. She and her camera man, Jim Kinsey, chatted with Hank and I and told us of their mission to create a show incorporating hunting, conservation and Jana’s famous skulls. We both thought the idea was great and couldn’t wait to see the huntress on the flat screen.Prois Staff Mia Anstine and Jana Waller

I caught the first episode last winter and truly enjoyed it. As I said, I am not around often so I felt it was unfortunate that I didn’t get to see more of Jana’s shows. When I saw the season 1 dvd set come available, I purchased it right away along with a Skull Bound T-shirt for my Little Gal. The Little Gal just loves the shirt and is currently watching Jana’s shows. Me? I watched nearly four hours of content right away and enjoyed every minute of it. The cinematography was outstanding, and I have been told season two will be even better. I’m going to have to get that one too.

I highly recommend the show to hunters and non-hunters alike. It is great to “travel the world with” Jana Waller as your host. She share’s the highs as well as the lows of her hunts (which I find impressive because not every show ends with a harvest). She and Jim have included a “Conservation Minute” in each episode to help educate the viewer on hunting, conservation and how we can all make a difference. They share the cultures of the people in the areas they spend time in with you the viewer, and you feel the friendship that is created along their journeys. You of course will also see unique and amazing skulls, both raw as well as embellished with Jana’s one of a kind beading and painting.

I am excited for my Little Gal to watch the excellent hunting and conservation ethics portrayed in the episodes and think you should take a moment to enjoy them as well. The Little Gal with her Skull Bound TV season 1 & T-shirt

Not smelling pretty, but happy to be Scent Free with HerCAMOShop products

Sometimes a girl doesn’t want to smell pretty.

Earlier this summer Hank, the Little Gal and I drove a giant loop through the south to hunt in Oklahoma and Alabama. We hunted with friends while in Oklahoma, and with Rack Nine Outdoors (RNO) in Alabama. We met up with friends from the Women’s Outdoor News and also HerCAMOShop.com’s Jeff and Shelly Ray. It was a pleasure to hunt with the group at RNO. They took very good care of us and one evening, while eating a delicious meal, Shelly Ray produced a gift to the Little Gal and I. She gave us a trial package of her scent free products.

Thanks to Jeff & Shelly Ray of HerCAMOShop.com

Thanks to Jeff & Shelly Ray of HerCAMOShop.com for the excellent ladies scent free product. So great in fact that it’s already mysteriously gone missing. Someone else loved it too!

I tested the products, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, lotion and body spray. They all passed my test of allowing a comb through my course thick hair. I was so pleased and especially impressed that I didn’t look like a black haired wild lion afterward. I say that because most volume shampoos add way too much volume for my extremely thick hair. The HerCAMOShop shampoo and conditioner did not. My hair felt thick but smooth. My hair had body, but did not stand up like a lion main. It was fantastic. Now I just had to take it out in the field for “the hunt”.

I am just returning from a bear hunt and no, I didn’t get a bear -YET-. Another huntress, who booked the same hunt, and I hunted in a pair with our guide. The other huntress got first shot and did get her bear. The scent free products obviously work well. We ended up close to bears in the brush. I am so pleased with HerCAMOShop.com’s scent free products and just had to share!

I also just ran acrossed my friend Becky Lou of BeckyLouOutdoors.com post. It is a review about the products. You simply have to check it out. She has said every word that I have thought as I tested the products. Read her post here: Becky Lou Outdoors HerCAMOShop Scent Free Product Review

Guys, if you surprise your beautiful huntress with these heavenly bath and body products for hunting season, she is sure to be happy, and trust me on this, “when the huntress is happy, everybody’s happy!” Becky Lou

Bear hunting excitement

I’m getting excited for bear hunting. It is one of my favorite hunts… Wait, they’re all my favorite right?! I love hunting, and I love the outdoors. With anticipation of the upcoming season I want to share one the MANY memorable encounters I’ve had with bears in the woods. What experiences have you had & what’s on your list this year?
The first day at our hunting spot we saw three bears! That day I learned we had very little time to judge the crossing bears and less time for me to raise my gun to make a shot. I would have to be quick because there was such a small window of opportunity where the bears were crossing. I decided to keep my rifle on my shooting sticks and close to my shoulder so I would be ready for a shot.  We sat and we sat.

The view from our hiding spot in the brush.

We hunted that thick brushy area for several days. It felt like months. We saw lots of bears. Some smaller than my dog and some as big as a car. I was fascinated watching their mannerisms and demeanor. Studying them is part of what I love about hunting.
One day a nice bear appeared directly in the clearing, right in the center of the cross-hairs, broadside for a perfect shot.
I quickly scanned the scene and flipped my safety off when into the picture ran two small cubs. WOA!!! Fortunately I did not squeeze a shot off.  It is not legal nor is it ethical to shoot a sow with cubs.
Then my heart jumped! Bears are dangerous! They are definitely not “Teddy” bears, and a momma bear is going to protect her cubs. We sat motionless.
We watched as that sow disappeared into the brush then crossed back toward the trees. Only one cub followed her. The other cub remained on the opposite side of the clearing.  My heart jumped further into my throat and my head pounded. I turned my eyes toward Hank as the momma bear grunted. We waited to see what was going to happen.  If that cub didn’t go would momma catch our scent and come after us?  She headed away, behind a bunch of scrub oak. Another grunt and the young’n finally trotted to her location.

The sow crosses with one cub in front of her.

The sow crosses with one cub in front of her.

We felt some sort of relief except we knew she wasn’t gone.  We could still see movement behind the brush. Our hearts raced as the sow re-appeared just thirty yards in front of us with her hair burled up. Her hide stood about six inches off her shoulders and back. We thought she had winded us! I slowly moved my hand to my pistol in preparation for defense. The sow grunted and groaned. The cubs followed her. Finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, she hearded the two cubs up the hill and away from us.

A great day of bow fishing and a new huntress added

We left in the late morning with a friend and his wife. We set out for a day of bow fishing at the lake. As we floated away from the marina I gave our friend a bow and explained to him the jug and reel. (read about his day here) The wife examined the arrow and said “You mean you really shoot a fish with this?!” I let out a laugh and said “YEP!”

She looked at me wide-eyed and said “That was an evil, fun laugh.”

I gave my regular voluminous, contagious laugh and shrugged as we made it to clear water and put the hammer down heading to a fishing spot.

As we watched her husband fish I explained to her how he was shooting and why his arrow was going above or below the fish he was shooting at. I showed her the reel and mechanisms so she would be ready when her turn came. She had been practicing with my old compound bow for a couple of months so she’s a pretty good at a target on land. Now was her chance to test her skills on not only a live, moving target, but a target under water. She kept her eye on her husband as he fished. She was studying so she’d be ready when it was her turn.

After numerous tries, the husband got him a fish and then it was the wife’s turn. We perched her at the bow of the boat and trolled. Immediately we saw a carp finning. She lifted her bow, began to draw and as quickly as we saw that carp it was gone, deep in the darkness of the lake water.

Not to fear. She was ready again and 30 yards a head she spotted another. She drew, shot and nailed that carp!

What?! Huh?! On her first bow fishing trip ever, and her FIRST try?! She had never even hunted an animal!

She let out an “evil laugh” and I screamed “HAH!!!! THERE’S THE EVIL LAUGH!”

We jumped up and down and cheered as I drew her fish in. Her husband stood at the back of the boat in awe with his jaw nearly to the ground. He, an accomplished elk hunter had just been shown up at bow fishing by his sweet little wife.

I love it!!!

A happy fish kiss after arrowing her first carp!

We carried on our day and she got another fish. It is so much fun to get ladies into the outdoors, and this outdoors lady just got into bow fishing!

Share the fun – It’s always an adventure!!!

Bowfishing – Sharing the fun with friends

Hank and I invited one of our friends and his wife (read about her day here) to come to the lake with us for an afternoon of challenge and fun. Our friend is a very successful archery hunter and had never had the fun of shooting a fish. We had shared stories and he kinda shrugged when we would tell them. He thought it was just too easy. His wife has just taken up shooting a compound bow and was excited at the opportunity to bring her skills out into real life. We motored down the lake and perched him with a bow on the front of the boat.

Shooting a fish – Easy right?

Not exactly. There are challenges. For one, you don’t have a sight on your bow fishing bow. Second, you have a string and a jug to contend with. Then you have the challenge of judging the depth of the fish. There is also no let off on the bow fishing bow so you are holding full weight at full draw. It can get tiresome. Due to the refraction of light through the water you have to aim lower than where the fish appears to be.

How low? That all depends on how deep the fish is in the water.

We trolled around the lake and found us a carp. Our hunter stood on the bow of the boat. He drew and shot. He missed. Just high of the fish. He is a great instinctive shooter, but he was learning to judge the depth. We continued to troll and each time we would reach an area that looked like “a good carp spot” he would draw his bow. He would wait at full draw. Since he is trains often and is in great shape, he had no problem holding for long periods. He was ready. As we motored through. Nothing. He let off.

Across the lake to another good spot. He drew. Elbow high in the air. Holding, holding…

A carp!

A shot!

A miss.

DANG IT!!!

A little frustration began so we had to lighten things up a little. As an accomplished elk hunter this was beginning to be upsetting. You can never be too serious. Elk slaying is much different than carp slaying. We joked, laughed and told stories. All the while explaining bowfishing to his wife. She was going to be next.

Finally, in an unlikely spot. A draw. Hold. Release!

An arrow flew with orange string trailing. SMACK! Right in the head of a great fish! After so many “swings and misses” our friend was elated at his catch.Bowfishing - First carp with a PSE bow

FINALLY!!!

First fish with a bow! Super fun challenge. Who knew shooting at the lake could be so great?! HOOKED on bow fishing, he’ll be back!

Stay tuned for the story of his wife and what she thinks of her first bow fishing trip too!

It’s always an adventure!

Happy Father’s Day!

We’ve all got one. Some of you are one. Some have lost one. I find myself in the latter this year. I can not say it has been easy to find myself with out someone to make a plan with this year, but I do have lots of memories of the years past and of course all the good times in between the designated day.

In memory, or as my friends say, in my “therapy”, I have been on the lake a lot. Dad took us all to the lake often as kids. We would load up in our friends boat and make the 24 mile drive down the dirt road to the lake. Yep. I said “in” the boat. That was way back when, and way back when we lived on a dirt road and road in the back of the pick up truck, in the boat and even with out seat belts. It’s amazing we survived huh?! Well. I’m not saying that’s how we should do it now. I’m saying we did it then and boy did we have fun!

We would meet several of our friends and families and spend the day in the sun on the lake. Oh man! Those were good times. Dad would make sure I didn’t drown and then mom would try to untangle the rat’s nest of long hair that was not only wind-blown, but wet and of course full of briars from hiking the surrounding hills.

Haha! All of that brings a huge smile to my face and leads me to where and who I am today.

I am a lover of all things Mother Nature has to offer. Because I love her so much and know how much of a healer she is, I’ve been spending as much time as I can enjoying what she has to offer. Because of the fond memories I have of playing, camping and a little fishing, I’ve been spending a lot of time on the water.

One day this past week I caught quite a few fish. None of them record breakers, unless we’re going for world record smallest, but all fun regardless. I brought them in and tossed them back. They made my day a lot of fun and brought a smile with each little challenge of casting into the hole. I smiled with each one I moved. Smiled with each one I gently brought aboard and gently tossed back.

Thanks Dad for teaching me about the lake. It’s been good “therapy” to be there. Happy Father’s Day!!!Spending a lot of time at the lake and doing plenty of fishing.
