Not smelling pretty, but happy to be Scent Free with HerCAMOShop products

Sometimes a girl doesn’t want to smell pretty.

Earlier this summer Hank, the Little Gal and I drove a giant loop through the south to hunt in Oklahoma and Alabama. We hunted with friends while in Oklahoma, and with Rack Nine Outdoors (RNO) in Alabama. We met up with friends from the Women’s Outdoor News and also HerCAMOShop.com’s Jeff and Shelly Ray. It was a pleasure to hunt with the group at RNO. They took very good care of us and one evening, while eating a delicious meal, Shelly Ray produced a gift to the Little Gal and I. She gave us a trial package of her scent free products.

Thanks to Jeff & Shelly Ray of HerCAMOShop.com

Thanks to Jeff & Shelly Ray of HerCAMOShop.com for the excellent ladies scent free product. So great in fact that it’s already mysteriously gone missing. Someone else loved it too!

I tested the products, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, lotion and body spray. They all passed my test of allowing a comb through my course thick hair. I was so pleased and especially impressed that I didn’t look like a black haired wild lion afterward. I say that because most volume shampoos add way too much volume for my extremely thick hair. The HerCAMOShop shampoo and conditioner did not. My hair felt thick but smooth. My hair had body, but did not stand up like a lion main. It was fantastic. Now I just had to take it out in the field for “the hunt”.

I am just returning from a bear hunt and no, I didn’t get a bear -YET-. Another huntress, who booked the same hunt, and I hunted in a pair with our guide. The other huntress got first shot and did get her bear. The scent free products obviously work well. We ended up close to bears in the brush. I am so pleased with HerCAMOShop.com’s scent free products and just had to share!

I also just ran acrossed my friend Becky Lou of BeckyLouOutdoors.com post. It is a review about the products. You simply have to check it out. She has said every word that I have thought as I tested the products. Read her post here: Becky Lou Outdoors HerCAMOShop Scent Free Product Review

Guys, if you surprise your beautiful huntress with these heavenly bath and body products for hunting season, she is sure to be happy, and trust me on this, “when the huntress is happy, everybody’s happy!” Becky Lou

New Mexico offers Youth Encouragement licenses to resident and non-resident hunters

Good morning. I was just taking a moment to catch up on email and news letters that are sitting in the InBox waiting for me. I had to share this one because it is GOOD NEWS!

From the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF), released August 1, 2012:

LOTS OF YOUTH ELK LICENSES, LEFTOVER DEER, JAVELINA LICENSES STILL AVAILABLE

New Mexico releases leftover licenses each year toward the end of the summer. It is always a chance to purchase a hunting license in the event you did not draw your first choice. The NMDGF indicates that they have lots of deer and javelina licenses available for purchase. If you didn’t draw in New Mexico, go check it out. All licenses are sold online at the department’s web-site: www.wildlife.state.us.

Now for what I consider the good news!

Youth antlerless elk licenses

Young hunters – resident or nonresident – who did not draw an elk license for the upcoming seasons can purchase one of more than 1,500 Youth Encouragement Elk Licenses available Aug. 2.
The special licenses – all for antlerless elk — will be available to any hunter younger that age 18 who did not draw a 2012-13 elk license, whether they applied or not. The licenses previously were available only to resident youths who had applied but were unsuccessful in drawing any big-game license. Sales were suspended for 24 hours beginning at 10 a.m. MDT Aug. 1, and will be reopened at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.
Under state law, youths younger that age 18 must have passed an approved hunter education course before applying or purchasing a hunting license. More information and a list of available classes are available at – HYPERLINK “http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us” http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us under the “Education” tab.
Available elk licenses include hunts for all weapon types in some of the most popular areas in the state.

WCO – 2012 Jicarilla 4-H Horse Camp

Hunt elk, bear, mule deer and merriam turkey with Wolf Creek Outfitters, Inc. - WCOWolf Creek Outfitters, Inc. was proud to be a part of the annual Jicarilla 4-H Horse Camp in Dulce, New Mexico. The camp is offered to kids in hopes to uplift them as well as the community. The tribe has a high incidence of suicide and substance abuse so they have designed the camp to offer the children education and insight. The camp teaches respect, responsibility, team work, communication and about substance abuse & how to avoid it.

Wolf Creek Outfitters brings horses to camp each year. The children pet, talk to and then ride the horses. For most it is their first ride ever, and very exciting. The ride is more than just taking a walk on a horse. The kids are learning the whole time. We help emphasize proper care and handling of animals. We explain that many animals will treat them the same way they treat the animal. In addition, the children are taught how to saddle a horse. They have to work together, as a team to get the pad and then heavy saddle up onto the horse and cinch and buckle it.

Various games are played at other stations. All teaching respect & communication. They also learn about the horse, the tribe’s heritage and self-pride. Wolf Creek Outfitters and our team enjoy helping in the cause.

Teaching the young & helping our neighbors.

ReVO 26 Pro Ears youth hearing protection

Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate. Guns are loud and the noise can cause hearing damage. They can also emit debris and hot gas that could cause eye injury. For these reasons, shooting glasses and hearing protectors should be worn by shooters and spectatorFrom the fundamental rules of safe gun handling by NRA

When we are shooting at the range it is always important to wear eye and hearing protection. You all know I have my Little Gal and her sight and hearing are important. We’re about to begin a lot of shooting this summer and since she’s a little smaller I received a set of youth ear muffs for her to try out. The neon green Pro Ears by Altus brands are just her size. The Little Gal shooting a Beretta .40 cal. Wearing Altus Brands ReVO ProEars.

The height adjustment is simple with a snapping interlock that holds in place very well. It adjusts to fit a small childs head up to an adult head and has a narrow circumference so they stay snug to the head. She wore them to the range for a day and I wore them to the range for a day. With the narrow circumference, I thought I may end up with the muff head ache that tends to happen as the squeeze tight to your head. This did not happen. The muffs held snug, but not so tight as to cause a head ache.

I also tested the muffs. I wore my earings just to give it a true test. The Super-Sized ProForm™ leather ear cushions are extremely soft and contour around your ears as well as safety glasses and earings. If you have spent a long amount of time at the range wearing a muff, you’ve probably had the problem of your glasses being pressed into your ears. The snug fitting Pro Ears didn’t cause the traditional pain I was testing for. They were soft and comfortable.

The Little Gal shot and I gave reminders and pointers. One thing about these muffs. They are not an electronic version. This was my only disappointment. When helping a child, I feel it is SO important for them to hear every word you say at the line. I would opt for their electronic version. The ReVO 26 Pro Ear muff is said to be adequate during situations where “total situation awareness” is not required. I am in agreement with this claim. The muff is great hearing protection for children shooting smaller caliber firearms. The Little Gal was able to hear adequate commands at close distances with out hollering and shouting.

ReVO 26 Pro Ears are available in various fun patterns, including zebra which is a favorite of the Little Gal and retail at $39.99. However, a child’s hearing is priceless! Take care!

Women’s Outdoor News: Mia and the Little Gal – Oklahoma Hog Hunt

The Little Gal and I always appreciate your support and enjoy sharing our tales. We hope you get a chance to have fun family adventures as well. Here’s a tale from last year.

Mia and the Little Gal: A Hog Hunt to Help Heal ‘Pops’

April 23, 2012 by Mia Anstine

Mia and the Little Gal reminisce about a Hog Hunt

The Little Gal and I had big plans for spring hunting this year. We were going on two different spring break hog hunts, a youth turkey hunt and we were going to be doing some good ol’ Oklahoma fishing. These plans unfortunately had to be cancelled, put off and changed. The Little Gal’s grandpa, aka “Pops,” became extremely ill, had kidney failure and passed away. The Little Gal learned a lot from the loss and the brief interruption or “inside-outing” of our lives. She and I are gathering ourselves back together with the help of Hank. He’s been a rock throughout it all for the both of us. He’s re-scheduled a couple of our plans for later in the summer and is working on getting us back to “right-side out.”

Turkey Hunting – Share the passion

I am currently preoccupied with life, loss and healing. For now – A repost of a story shared a couple of years ago because Turkey Hunting starts in just 17 days in our neck of the woods.

I love sharing the outdoor passion, hunting, fishing, hiking, exploring, with the kids.  It is so rewarding to hear them talking and telling their stories.  They are our future.  It is great when I see a kid that has a respect for Mother Earth, and even better when they become connected to it through their experiences in it.youth turkey hunt

In Colorado, the kids can hunt as long as they can pass the hunter’s safety course.  They can not however hunt big game until they are 12 years old.  They get to hunt small game, coyotes, prairie dogs, grouse, and of course turkey.  We found a love for turkey hunting when we were approached the challenge of taking the kids.

We have a friend with a daughter the age of ours, and have combined efforts with him to take the two girls hunting together.  We took the Little Gal and her friend on their first turkey hunt one spring morning.  The two girls were excited, and I am pretty sure one was a little nervous.  We rode up a valley on horseback and spotted some fresh turkey droppings.  They were definitely in the area.  Our friend let out a call to try to get a bird to talk.  Nothing. We continued along up a hillside and to another draw.  In the dust of the slope, we found fresh tracks.  Another call was let out, and then an answer!

Up above us on the ridge of a hill we heard a tom gobble.  The girls eyes sparked, and I know their hearts jumped with anticipation.  We made a plan to get in closer to that gobbler.

Before we headed out, another call was chirped, and this time there were two gobblers that answered.  Perfect!  Up the draw we went.

We rode a short ways and found a spot below the ridge on which we had heard the toms. A draw came down off that hill and opened up into a meadow.  Our friend chirped on his call and we heard the gobbles again. We decided this would be the spot to suit setting up two 10-year-old girls to get their birds.  We would have to call them down that draw and into the clearing so they could have a good close shot.

Hank sat with the two girls up close under some oak brush and down fall. It sufficed as a perfect blind and rest for their shot guns.  One girl on either side, they decided who would shoot first.  The Little Gal’s friend was the winner, and the Little Gal would get second shot if both toms happened to get close enough.

Our friend and I sat a little further behind to call.  A little pur and then some chirping.  We heard the gobbles off in the distance but they were getting closer.  Then we sat silent and waited.  After several moments, we called again.  The gobbles were even closer yet.

They were coming!

Hank sat with the girls who could not have been more still if you asked them to.  They were frozen with excitement.  We sat behind and could not see any of the events, but continued to call giving the toms time to come in.  We heard one off toward the right, and later one straight ahead.  Closer and closer, slow but steady.  The girls had their guns up on the rest.  Hank told them to be ready, and they held their breaths.

Suddenly a tom appeared out in the middle of the draw.  He appeared in full strut.  He came forward toward the girls so suddenly.  There was a gasp as the Little Gal’s friend lost her breath in awe and excitement.  The tom heard the sound and turned immediately running for the brush.  The excited little girl shot, but he just wasn’t near enough yet.

That is when our friend and I, from behind the brush heard all sorts of screaming and excitement going on.  We jumped up to see if someone got a bird.  It was the girls running and jumping with excitement.  They could not believe they had gotten to see a tom, much  less a tom strutting toward them.

There was no bird to put in the satchel that day, but there was a lot of excitement, learning and fun had by all. There is nothing like taking a kid for their first hunt. The moments in the field are priceless for sure and some that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

It’s Always An Adventure!

Arrow Puller from TenPoint Crossbow Technologies®

The Little Gal was fortunate enough to receive a compound bow for Christmas. We practice shooting three to four times a week and she is really getting pretty good. If any of you have spent any time shooting targets with a compound or crossbow, you probably know it can sometimes be hard to pull your arrow from the block or bag. This is no different for a Little Gal.

I recently received a Bednar Perfect Puller™  from TenPoint Crossbow Technologies®.  It is an arrow puller that was named after and initially developed by Bill Bednar, the late Hall of Fame Archer. Its design allows you to easily pull arrows especially from high density targets. I decided since the Little Gal sometimes has trouble getting her arrows out of the target, she would be the perfect one to test this product.TenPoint Crossbow Technologies Bednar Perfect Puller

The Bednar Perfect Puller proved to be very easy to use. It is similar to a pair of pliers and fits easily in your hand. The Little Gal is left-handed so it was a pleasure to learn that it works equally well in the right or wrong hand pullers. (haha!) Note: She didn’t think that was funny.

The puller has interchangeable grippers and can fit the shaft of a standard compound bow arrow as well as the larger shaft of a crossbow bolt. It also grips equally well on  carbon or aluminum.

The Little Gal was excited to hit her mark with her arrows and then to give the new puller a try. She easily gripped it in her hand and pulled straight back to remove her arrow from the target. It was much easier than grasping the arrow and pulling with her hands. The puller did not move as it gripped and in no time at all the Little Gal had retrieved her arrows from the target and was ready to shoot again. Little Gal uses TenPoint Crossbow Perfect PullerWhen I asked the Little Gal her favorite thing about the arrow puller she said she thought it was great that she could pull the arrow out with one hand. She was also excited at how quick she could pull all the arrows even if they were close together. Her hands were not red, sore or tired. I noted that the puller is hunter orange so when it accidentally gets set down on the range, in the dirt or various other places it is easy to find. The handles also have a notch built-in that doubles as a nock tool for your arrows.

Speaking of the puller being left in various locations. The puller was left on the table out at the range and un-knowingly made it through a snow storm. This means moisture, freezing cold and of course high UV rays. I doubted that it would continue to grip after surviving the weather. When we used the puller again it continued to perform just as well as the day we pulled it from the package.

The perfect puller will be available April 4, 2012 at various archery shops as well as through TenPoint. Suggested retail is $20.00 and well worth the money for any archer.
