Mia & the Little Gal: Our first south-of-the-border sport-fishing adventure in Mexico

Is there something about fun that entails work and waking up before the sun? In the life of Mia and the Little Gal (LG), it sure seems to be the case. Whether we are hunting or fishing, we do believe in the saying, “The early bird gets the worm.” This early-morning adventure was a first for myself and LG. We were super excited because Hank was taking us sport fishing.

Rest in Peace Sweet Daisy

20121227-120251.jpg

A proud Daisy & Mia. A day on the lake.

Those of you who have followed me for any time at all know I have a special sidekick, a companion, a pal, a fierce protector, a lover, a hunting & fishing partner and a friend. Today I am not speaking of my Little Gal or Hank but of my Daisy, my Weimaraner.
Sweet Daisy and I clicked the very first time we met. Hank owned her first and through him we were lucky enough to connect. It was no time at all before she was MY DOG. I would shoot a duck and she would bring it back to me. Hank would shoot a duck and she would bring it back to me. Haha! Maybe not the best at her job, but she sure took care of me!
I nearly lost her to a turned stomach last spring, the week after my Dad passed. She knew I needed her then and made it through a surgery with flying colors. The vet complimented us on what wonderful shape she was in for her age. Pretty sure that’s due to our many adventures.
We had a lot of good times. Lots of hunting. Lots of hugs. Lots of hikes. Lots of camping trips. She was a chow hound by breed, and her belly constantly got her into trouble.
This Christmas was no different. Daisy mowed two mesh bags filled with gold foil covered chocolate coins. The mesh bags held the foil in a ball and stopped up her stomach. She endured a seven hour surgery to remove the debris and then to clean up stomach fluids which had spilled into her body cavity. At almost 11 years old, it was just too much. She went into shock and passed away around 11:00am December 27, 2012.
Rest in peace sweet friend. You will be missed!

Bowfishing – Sharing the fun with friends

Hank and I invited one of our friends and his wife (read about her day here) to come to the lake with us for an afternoon of challenge and fun. Our friend is a very successful archery hunter and had never had the fun of shooting a fish. We had shared stories and he kinda shrugged when we would tell them. He thought it was just too easy. His wife has just taken up shooting a compound bow and was excited at the opportunity to bring her skills out into real life. We motored down the lake and perched him with a bow on the front of the boat.

Shooting a fish – Easy right?

Not exactly. There are challenges. For one, you don’t have a sight on your bow fishing bow. Second, you have a string and a jug to contend with. Then you have the challenge of judging the depth of the fish. There is also no let off on the bow fishing bow so you are holding full weight at full draw. It can get tiresome. Due to the refraction of light through the water you have to aim lower than where the fish appears to be.

How low? That all depends on how deep the fish is in the water.

We trolled around the lake and found us a carp. Our hunter stood on the bow of the boat. He drew and shot. He missed. Just high of the fish. He is a great instinctive shooter, but he was learning to judge the depth. We continued to troll and each time we would reach an area that looked like “a good carp spot” he would draw his bow. He would wait at full draw. Since he is trains often and is in great shape, he had no problem holding for long periods. He was ready. As we motored through. Nothing. He let off.

Across the lake to another good spot. He drew. Elbow high in the air. Holding, holding…

A carp!

A shot!

A miss.

DANG IT!!!

A little frustration began so we had to lighten things up a little. As an accomplished elk hunter this was beginning to be upsetting. You can never be too serious. Elk slaying is much different than carp slaying. We joked, laughed and told stories. All the while explaining bowfishing to his wife. She was going to be next.

Finally, in an unlikely spot. A draw. Hold. Release!

An arrow flew with orange string trailing. SMACK! Right in the head of a great fish! After so many “swings and misses” our friend was elated at his catch.Bowfishing - First carp with a PSE bow

FINALLY!!!

First fish with a bow! Super fun challenge. Who knew shooting at the lake could be so great?! HOOKED on bow fishing, he’ll be back!

Stay tuned for the story of his wife and what she thinks of her first bow fishing trip too!

It’s always an adventure!

Happy Father’s Day!

We’ve all got one. Some of you are one. Some have lost one. I find myself in the latter this year. I can not say it has been easy to find myself with out someone to make a plan with this year, but I do have lots of memories of the years past and of course all the good times in between the designated day.

In memory, or as my friends say, in my “therapy”, I have been on the lake a lot. Dad took us all to the lake often as kids. We would load up in our friends boat and make the 24 mile drive down the dirt road to the lake. Yep. I said “in” the boat. That was way back when, and way back when we lived on a dirt road and road in the back of the pick up truck, in the boat and even with out seat belts. It’s amazing we survived huh?! Well. I’m not saying that’s how we should do it now. I’m saying we did it then and boy did we have fun!

We would meet several of our friends and families and spend the day in the sun on the lake. Oh man! Those were good times. Dad would make sure I didn’t drown and then mom would try to untangle the rat’s nest of long hair that was not only wind-blown, but wet and of course full of briars from hiking the surrounding hills.

Haha! All of that brings a huge smile to my face and leads me to where and who I am today.

I am a lover of all things Mother Nature has to offer. Because I love her so much and know how much of a healer she is, I’ve been spending as much time as I can enjoying what she has to offer. Because of the fond memories I have of playing, camping and a little fishing, I’ve been spending a lot of time on the water.

One day this past week I caught quite a few fish. None of them record breakers, unless we’re going for world record smallest, but all fun regardless. I brought them in and tossed them back. They made my day a lot of fun and brought a smile with each little challenge of casting into the hole. I smiled with each one I moved. Smiled with each one I gently brought aboard and gently tossed back.

Thanks Dad for teaching me about the lake. It’s been good “therapy” to be there. Happy Father’s Day!!!Spending a lot of time at the lake and doing plenty of fishing.
